Social Media & Email Marketing Harmony

Kat Mathena - Friday, January 29, 2010
If you're doing email marketing and social media, why not connect the dots? Adding "share" buttons to your email newsletter can dramatically increase traffic to your social sites.

According to a case study by Marketing Sherpa, simply adding the buttons made a huge impact. The team compared statistics from the month before launching social sharing to the month after adding the feature and found:
  • Visits from Twitter increased 1,680%
  • Visits from LinkedIn increased 2,070%
  • Visits from Facebook increased 1,351%
Overall subscriber interaction with newsletter articles also jumped the month after adding social sharing buttons. Users clicking any of the share buttons (Email, LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter) increased about 25% when social networks were included, compared to clicks to forward an article via email only.

Consumer Expectations

Kat Mathena - Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Some good thoughts from Gary Vaynerchuk. A large part of the reason consumer expectations are changing so drastically is due to the myriad of ways brands now have to communicate and interact with their consumers; such as social media, email marketing and blogging. This video should speak loudly to brands and companies who are considering utilizing these online tools but still don't understand why they absolutely need to.

Red Cross Uses Social Media for Good

Kat Mathena - Monday, January 18, 2010
Social media has not been the best medium for fundraising campaigns in the past. The cause tends to get a lot of buzz but most people don't get passed the credit barrier. The Red Cross is taking a new approach with it's Haiti relief efforts.

They have been using Twitter and Facebook to spread the word about their text message campaign "text "Haiti" to 90999 and a $10 donation will be added to your cell phone bill." While the news coverage has helped spark desire, the social media/text collaboration has made the process efficient and enabled tens of thousands of individuals to take action toward a common goal.

Four of Twitter's top trending topics are currently related to the Haiti earthquake. As of last week the Red Cross had raised more than $4 million in donations. The simplicity design of the campaign has made it quick and easy for more people to open their wallets.

Your Twitter Authority

Kat Mathena - Friday, January 15, 2010

Google relies heavily on user's Twitter authority to determine their tweet's worth for their real-time search results. Some of the factors that go into determining a tweet's authority are:

1. The number of followers you have.

2. The number of followers your followers have. If your followers have high authority your authority will increase.

3. Tweets about trending topics related to common search terms.

Start grading your tweets and incorporating keyword-rich content. A good Twitter authority will help you generate more exposure for your tweets and the content you're promoting.

Top US Companies and Twitter

Kat Mathena - Wednesday, January 13, 2010
Top US companies are missing out on a large portion of the potential Twitter holds for their businesses, according to two separate studies from PR firm Weber Shandwick and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Both studies indicate that while Corporate America is familiar with Twitter, it is not taking advantage of the full range of Twitter’s business capabilities.

The Twitter online social network has an estimated 20 million US users and 50 million users worldwide. Yet according to a Weber Shandwick research paper entitled Do Fortune 100 Companies Need a Twittervention (pdf), while 73% of Fortune 100 companies registered a total of 540 Twitter accounts, 76% of those accounts do not post tweets often, and 52% are not considered actively engaged as measured by engagement metrics such as numbers of links, hashtags, references and retweets.

Moreover, 50% of Fortune 100 accounts had fewer than 500 followers, 15% were inactive or used as placeholders to protect against the “brand-jacking” (or unauthorized use) of a company name, and 4% were abandoned after a specific event. Some 41 accounts not included in the study group of 540 accounts appeared to be brand-jacked accounts using a brand name without authorization.

Social Media In Email

Kat Mathena - Monday, January 11, 2010
Business executives around the world are optimistic about next year, according to the “2010 Marketing Trends Survey” from StrongMail. Nearly nine in 10 plan to increase or maintain their marketing budgets, and one-half expect their customers to be spending more in the coming year.

E-mail and social media top the list of marketing tactics respondents will increase spending on in 2010.

Combining social media and e-mail marketing is a growing trend. More than four in 10 business executives said integrating the two tactics was one of their most important e-mail marketing initiatives for 2010, just after improving performance and targeting and growing opt-in lists.

Around one-quarter of respondents had already implemented an integrated strategy, and another 24% had formulated a strategy and were researching how to put it in practice. But 18% of business executives wanted to add social components into their e-mail campaigns and did not know where to begin.

Kat Mathena - Thursday, January 07, 2010
It's a new decade, meaning it's time for some serious New Year's resolutions. If you've ever considered starting a blog for your company, now's the time. A study from HubSpot revealed some compelling numbers about how much blogging can really help your marketing results.

On average, companies that blog have 55% more visitors, 97% more inbound links and 434% more indexed pages. More visitors means more people coming in contact with your company that can be converted to leads and sales. More inbound links means you have more authority within search engines. And the more indexed pages you have, the higher your chances are of being found on search engines.

Do you blog for your company? Has it made a positive difference?
